Options Trading Calm Before the Fed Storm

The options trading is decidedly negative this morning prior to the Fed meeting this afternoon. Forex markets showing relatively strong dollar post US market open combined with weak Yen and Euro. Basically this is looking like a mixed bag vis a vis risk. Everyone trading in US markets is conservative but foreign markets are neutral to bullish. I would expect we’re going to stay pretty much where we are (down better than 100bp) more or less right up until the Fed meeting. I can’t imagine what on earth the Fed would be able to say that would lift markets. The wrong words out of Ben Bernanke’s mouth this afternoon could send US markets into a steep dive. This is a great day to spend somewhere other than in front of your trading screen.. because basically you have no control and nothing good can happen. Mixed Options Trading Signals Leave a Market Uncertain

Options trading signals showing a mixed market today. While the quick runup of the last few days has had everyone talking the steady movement upwards has been the hallmark of an all too familiar pattern of late. Basically this has been market movement upwards on no volume a.k.a. manipulation. Just like all the other times we’ve seen this pattern most everyone is expecting a precipitous drop… but who is going to throw the switch? Will it be today or tomorrow? From what height will the fall come? Yesterday’s 2.26% climb in the S&P 500 caught more than a few people off guard but retails continue to remain on the sidelines because they know a sham market when they see one. Like most days when our economic bias is negative, we’ll be looking for forex trading risk negative as our “go” switch. Favored trade (particularly with the near term low in the VIX) is the SPY and DIA puts. If we get a drop in the market gains will be multiplied by the corresponding increase in volatility – practically a given at this point due to the lack of retail participation on the buy side. Day Trading Options to Make Money 7/27/10

Day trading options to make money today involve starting with about a plus 0.6% rise in the S&P 500 off yesterday’s close. We missed with our binary hedge yesterday (which happens more often than not when you don’t get a 50-75bp spread). I’m not 100% certain but I think someone let a cat out of the bag today and I am trying to interpret where that will ultimately lead us long term. This new bit of info has serious implications about what the long term bias should be. It’s… important. Anyway, we had strong risk plus in the forex trading markets overnight. Will have to watch where forex markets move post US open as per normal (markets were still pro risk but weaker than overnight levels). Bias (pending thoughts above) remains negative however I don’t let that constrain me. When it comes to options trading / day trading I go where I think the money is going, regardless of bias. Options Trading Market Not Overly Impressed with European Bank Stress Test

The options trading market doesn’t appear to be overly impressed with the results of the European Bank stress tests over the weekend. In fairness to all however the stress tests were designed to reassure bank customers, not the market. Despite the terrific week for the major US indices like the S&P 500, Dow Jones, and Nasdaq trading today is starting off pretty tame. Though I imagine traders were happy with results last week I don’t think they were at all impressed by *another* seven US bank failures this weekend (total YTD 102). We had actually gone along for several weeks in a row with low US bank failures – pretty much since the July 4th holiday. Now the pace seems to be picking up again. According to the European stress tests only seven or so major European banks were considered at risk. Try telling that tale to the customers of the more than 260 +/- US bank failures the US FDIC has overseen since the Lehman collapse in Sept. 2008. Strong Forex Market in Pre-Market Options Trading

Sponsored LinkOptions trading looking up as strong forex market appetite for risky currencies is driving S&P 500 and major US market index futures higher this morning. Retail traders obviously won’t get the opportunity to participate in the morning pre-market rally – so instead we’re lurking on the sidelines with an eye on the forex market. At the open we’re looking for decisiveness in the retail forex market to determine what the post-open movement will be. Yesterday we say the pre-market activity acting against the retail trade however it is looking like both retail and institutional investors are on the risk-positive side. As always, looking carefully at the risky currencies AUD, EUR, CAD, and NZL versus USD, CHF and Yen. Strong USD, Yen, (and to less extent) CHF look for S&P 500 reversal. Otherwise it’s going to be a strong Up day. As before, our overall intermediate term bias remains negative – a market high today may provide an opportunity to pick up a longer duration put option as a “flash crash” hedge. Options trading activity looking for small rise this morning with the rise in EURUSD, also risk forex crosses with AUD and NZL. Pre-market activity in these same risk currencies was weak so I expect a turn (and S&P 500 fall) early in the trading session. In afternoon activity we’re seeing a broad but relatively thin switch into risky forex market currencies. Doesn’t seem to me to be convincing. The market has reversed it’s earlier predicted losses however unless the forex market shift increases in conviction we still expect a modestly negative close. It’s tough to read a mixed market – overall day showing risk-averse but intra-day showing a little more risk tolerance. In past situations the overall day indicator has proven stronger.
